Problem Space
In 2014 NYU, located principally in Manhattan, New York and Polytechnic University, located in Brooklyn, New York merged. The Polytechnic University became NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering. In the immediate aftermath of the merger there was confusion about how NYU’s disability policies would be implemented on its new Brooklyn campus and faculty and students there often felt isolated and confused about the University’s accessibility policies. I was tasked with figuring out how to ameliorate this situation.
Process
I embarked upon an outreach tour at the Brooklyn campus, setting up meetings with department chairs, faculty, administrators, and students in every department.
Outcomes and Deliverables
Based on the information I gathered, I determined that we needed to set-up a satellite office on the Brooklyn campus. I led this process–finding office space and managing a small staff of people–to ensure that NYU’s accessibility policies were uniformly applied in all campuses and that students and faculty felt supported.
